Q: This infielder won a World Series ring with the Boston Red Sox despite striking out in his only appearance.  After his playing career was over he was a coach with the minor league Baltimore Orioles where he helped train Babe Ruth.  They became life long friends.  But his true claim to fame was that he was the first major league player to execute an unassisted triple play.  In 1909, while playing for the Cleveland Naps (later Indians) he caught a line drive while playing shortstop.  He stepped on second and then tagged a runner coming from first.  It happened so fast that the pitcher, Cy Young, asked him why he was leaving the field.

Everyone is in the ground.  There was no need for youths in Asia this year.  Twenty-five plants were given away to a fellow at work and six others were planted on the side of the house.  Thirty-nine plants were planted in the main garden.  Now we wait.  Forty-nine days until the 4th of July.  Could this be the year?

The garden was tilled for the seventh and final time before this weekend's planting.  You would think with that many tills and that many exposed bugs and worms I would at least get a "thank you" from the robins.  But no, nothing.

    

And all the locations for the plants have been set up.

More Types

When I was growing up, occasionally our supper would consist only of pot pies, those little 4 inch pies in the tin pan.  My mother would throw a bunch in the oven; I usually got my fill with three of them.  At that time there were chicken, turkey, and beef pot pies.  To identify them my mother would scratch a "C", a "B", or a "T" in the crust.  Recently I discovered new types of pies in the frozen food section. 

Baseball Trivia - 15

Q: Monty Stratton was a pitcher for the Chicago White Sox from 1934 to 1938.  In 1938 he lost his leg in a hunting accident.  Wearing a prosthetic leg, he was able to play in the minor leagues from 1946 to 1953.  He was portrayed by Jimmy Stewart in the 1949 film The Stratton Story.

However, the first player in the major leagues with an artificial leg was a pitcher for the Washington Senators.  He lost his leg when his fighter plane was shot down in Germany during WWII.  His only appearance came in the second game of a double header on August 4, 1945.  He came in in relief and pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up 1 run on three hits and 2 strikeouts.  Who was he?
